Great educational toy w/some annoying bugs
Yes, the Leapster is swell, all the games are wonderful, and my 2 and 4 year old have spent countless hours playing with it and all the games.
But I have had recurring bugs with the system that have cropped up through four Leapsters, all bought new:
1) The dreaded "question mark" when a game is inserted. Every single game we put in, even brand spanking new from the box, into a brand new Leapster, has the annoying "beepbeep" chime and the question mark. The only way to get it to work is to take the game out, blow on the innards (to remove crumbs/dust? I don't know) and stick the game back in. It's insane.
2) Turning off by itself
3) Freezing up
5) Sort of half freezing up, with weird "bubbles" noises, then freezing up after that.
This is with all four Leapsters, brand new batteries, brand new games. It appears to be systemic, at least with us.
I've purchased replacement Leapsters for both children, yet the problems persist. Next time they get so bad a replacement is in order, I'll try L-Max or Leapster 2 and keep my fingers crossed.

Leapster for a 5 year old
The Leapster is a great way to keep my 5 year old looking and listening to the stories to be able to get into the games. It helps him listen for story details an understand the way a story is put together. A great "toy"

Better than a Game Boy want better games!
This was challenging enough to intrigue my children when we bought it for Christmas 2007. They were five and six, now they are six and seven. We bought the rechargeable battery pack, and a three extra games. The games are lacking a little in the entertainment dept. While very educational, they lack pizzazz. For instance, the cars driving game. My son and daughter enjoyed what they were learning. If the game had more driving challenges they would have been learning without realizing it. They like it way better than flashcards, but not enough to play the game without being interested in the subject matter. Same thing with the princess came and another math game. Also, I have not seen many, actually, any, new games on the market. Hope to see some, that I think will excite them, before christmas. Had I purchased this a year earlier, it would have been played with on a frequent basis. As a gift we got the pink leapster that hooks up to the T.V. I recommend that, if it is affordable, for easier family/friend interaction during game play.

Same bug problem
Hi I have the same problem as the previous reviewer. My leapster was working fine all along for about 4 months then suddenly whenever we insert a game cartridge in, a question mark prompting for cartridge will appear. It seems that the leapster cannot recognise the presence of a cartridge. I have to knock the cartridge real hard into the leapster each time for it to work. Also, it would freeze at times, or just go off on its own halfway through the game.
I thought initially it may be due to too much playing or handling on my kids' part, now it seems that is not the case, since others also encountered this problem. I am considering buying the new leapster2 and hope that it will not have such problems again.

My leapster didn't last a year
The leapster I bought my son did not last through the year. It broke after about 7 months. I have tried repeatedly to contact customer service just to see if I can get it fixed. I know it's not still under warranty and I have no idea where the receipt is at this point. I have spent at least half an hour on the phone several days in a row trying to get through at Leapster. Disappointing at best.

Our kids love them!
These are fantastic for our two kids (ages 3 and 5). The games are very educational and fun, too. The kids love to play them. The Leapsters are very well made and travel well. Great for car and plane trips, and they have a headset jack for the times where you don't want to disturb the folks near by. I highly recommend these systems.

Fun Entertainment for Children
I bought this for my daughter for her 5th birthday and she hasn't put it down since. She loves the games that are on it along with the games that can be purchased for it. It teaches her shapes, numbers, letters, how to pay attention to directions, etc along with having fun. It was easy for her to learn how to play the games compared to the DS.

AWESOME!! (is how my 3-year-old girl describes it)
My daughter loves her "game boy" she got this toy for her 3-bday (May-08). With our help and leapfrog's she knows the letters and their sounds, shapes and colors. I have no problem at all with this game. I have been using Duracell rechargeable batteries which work excellent. I highly recommend the Kindergarten game.

Great educational toy....Who knew??
I had difficulty a few years ago buying my son a portable video game and I finally decided on a Gameboy Advance (DS and PSP not popular then & too expensive!) over the Leapster b/c the Gameboy had so many more games available. Boy, what a mistake! The gameboy requires ALOT of reading and my son just finished 1st grade this year, so he really didn't get much use out of the gameboy. Then, just a couple of months ago, our neighbors were moving and gave my 3 yr old daughter their leapster with about 6 or 7 games and carrying case. Both of my kids love this and it's SO MUCH MORE EDUCATIONAL than any other video game system I've seen. My son now has his game boy and a Nintendo DS and they argue over the Leapster. It's great for any child as the games are really fun (I like to play!) and the directions are spoken and don't require a child to read sentences to be able to understand how to play a game. This is a GREAT 1st or only game system. Thanks to our friends, we have a great educational toy that my kids love to play and has been very durable. The case is great and makes it easy to store everything and take it with us. My 3 yr old can even pack and unpack everything in the case. Great Choice!!!!!

Love it!
We bought this for our daughter for her 5th birthday. She LOVES it. And it is definitely teaching her many things. She bought one additional game for it, and would play it for hours on end if we let her! It's very durable. She's dropped it a few times, and it's still working perfectly. I'd highly recommend it!

My 5-year-olds Favorite Game
The Kindergarten and the Sonick leapster games are my daughter's favorite. She will actually plead with me each night to let her play it before she goes to bed. We also have Thomas, Spongebob, Disney Princess, Scooby Snacks, and Spiderman. But the Kindergarten game is by far her favorite, and one of the more educational games.

Great buy
I purchased this for my 5 year old because of the other good reviews I'd read on amazon, and I wasn't disappointed - both of my children go crazy for this game, more than any of the other leapster games we have.

My daughter *loves* it!!
We bought this and another game for my just-turned 4 year-old daughter's Leapster this Christmas and she loves it! This game is a great way to help your kids learn to spell in a fun way. My daughter is big on learning and this game is perfect for her. In the month since she's been using it she's started spelling SO many words, it's amazing! She would play this game all day if we let her. Excellent game! Definitely the best of all the Leapster games and one of the best educational games available.

Great game!
I gave this game to my daughter for her 4th birthday and she loves it. It is one of her favorite leapster games--and she has a lot of them. It holds her attention and is a great educational tool. I would highly recommend this one.

Great little laptop
My son loves to carry this around "like mom and dad". He is just over 2 years, so the toy may be a bit too old for him. He hasn't figured out the stationary mouse, or the different games and functions, but loves to put it on his lap and push buttons. I'm sure he will grow into it. Screen is real basic big diode black and white LCD, so don't expect any graphics or video type items, real basic stuff, but OK for young ones. Case is durable...seems to be able to withstand drops.

HELP- lowercase letters?
Our 3.5 year old likes it since he is not allowed to touch my laptop, and it is one of his only toys that keeps his attention. He just got it last night though, so give it time. I do have a nagging question:
How do you change the letters on the screen to lowercase? My son somehow did it last night, none of us can figure it out, and the instructions mention nothing about switching to lowercase. My son discovering such was a fluke- does anyone know how to do this? Thanks!

Great toy
I purchased this around december as a christmas gift. My son was 1 1/2 at the time. This toy has been dropped, thrown, kicked and pounded so much and still works just the same. He still plays with it after all this time and usually gets bored with all of his toys after about 2 days.

Son loves this!
I bought this for my son when he was 18 months old. He was very interested in it immediately. Now he is 2 1/2 years old and still loves it. He knows his entire upper and lower case alphabet and can play the letter games, maneuver the phonics section, etc. I just bought a V Tech computer so that he can do more advanced learning games. I agree with others that the mouse is not very easy to use. My son got frustrated with this and does not play the games with the mouse. I would be surprised if a 7 yr old were interested in this toy. I would think it's appropriate for a 2-5 year age group.h

Great Gift
Fisher-Price® Fun 2 Learn Laughtop
I ordered this gift and had it sent to my great nephew for his 3rd birthday, May 22, 2008. This was a hit. He plays with it for hours and when he gets something right he laughs and claps his hands. He carries with him like a brief case. He does not have any problems with the mouse and this keeps his attention for a very long time. It looks just like a lap top.
This is a keeper and will be enjoyed for a very long time because of the different levels.
Thank you Fisher Price and Amazon for such great prices.

Environmentally Friendly!
My son absolutely loves this game! He runs up to me every few minutes and asks me about different facts he learned, such as: "Mommy, did you know that glass can be recycled over and over again forever?!" Our family recycles and while our son has gone along with it, he is now getting the "big picture." At the end of a game, it gives different facts about recycling and the environment. Some of the other facts include how long it takes for different objects to decompose in a land fill. Now it's my son asking ME what else we can recycle! This game was well worth the money in my opinion!

A Lot of Fun!
My 6 yr. old son just got this for his birthday. He loves it and has already played it over and over. His favorite game is the Axiom Action. He plays this on his Leapster Learning System, not the Leapster2.

Good little Game
This game was a good game, not a great one but a good one. There are several games to choose from on the cartridge. Some can hold my son's attention (he is 5) and others are too simple to hold his interest. He enjoys being involved in games like the Batman game where you control the character through a labyrinth and make choices along the way. Overall, this game will not be one he gravitates to often but it will be one he returns to when he gets bored of the Batman and Spiderman cartridges.
