Best Children's Digital Camera

My daughter received two digital cameras for her birthday. Both were the two that I had researched and found to be decent. This one and the Fisher Price one. The FP is garbage.. it is difficult to use and the screen resolution is awful! This Vtech one is far more durable and easy to use and takes beautiful pictures by comparison. The FP one the child has to stay absolutely still to take the picture otherwise it blurs, but this one takes pictures of moving objects aswell. Of course it is a childrens camera so it is not pristine quality but it is the best camera for a pre-schooler by far! It also has cute face covers and fun software and camera case. Great gift!

Survived being held under running water!

My son (he'll be 4 in Aug) has had this camera since Christmas of 2008. He LOVES it. He's always taking pictures and looking at the screen. He's even figured out how to record his voice. He gets such a kick out of that.

A couple of nights ago, I heard the water running. I went downstairs and he was holding the camera under running water. I explained that he can't do this and that the camera is probably broken now. So my husband took the camera apart and we let it dry to see if it could be saved. To our surprise - IT STILL WORKS. We had to let it dry out all night but when my husband put it back together it works just fine!

I wouldn't recommend putting the camera in water (maybe we just got lucky) but I can say that this camera appears to be kid-proof and we are VERY VERY happy with this purchase!

One of the best gifts ever...

I bought this camera after comparing ratings on other children's digital cameras. It's too bad that nobody seems to be putting a kid-proof case onto a better camera; I actually considered buying a used adult model, figuring that the photo quality would be much better for the same money--but then considered that my kids would likely demolish the thing with a single drop.

The VTech was given to my daughter for her 6th birthday a month ago, and has been in her hands almost constantly ever since, while privileged siblings have been allowed short periods of use when she felt particularly generous (they're begging for one of their own in the meantime). To be honest, I suspect she likes the games as much as the camera function, but she still uses the camera very frequently. There are a selection of fun "stamps" that can be added to the photos as they're taken--a favorite is the pig nose.

Battery life is amazing: I outfitted it with rechargeable AA's and have only had to charge them once a week or so. Remember that she has hardly put the thing down!

Ditto what other reviewers have said about the SD card used as the default for storage. Buy one, or (as I did) use the dinky one that came with your own camera--the advantage of low-res is that pics take hardly any disk space.

Considering the low resolution of the photos (big enough for an e-mail but little else) they are surprisingly clear. The flash is very helpful, given my long years of experience with kids taking photos without flash. Videos are fun to take and watch on the camera screen, but pretty bad quality when watched on a TV screen. The AV cable is included, along with a USB cable.

Durability seems excellent; I'm sure it's been dropped a number of times, and the screen is getting scratched somewhat, but otherwise no problems.

We have not yet used the software that came with the camera; thus far she's content to just take photos and then delete them and take more.

Overall, I'd highly recommend this camera, at least until somebody wakes up and decides to make one that will take "real" photos and passable video.

Great for Toddlers!

We bought two of these for our 2 1/2 year old bou-girl twins and they LOVE them! I was pleasantly surprised to find out they come with interchangeable faceplates, which made it easy to customize them for each kid. My only complaint is that Amazon doesn't carry the other colors of this camera. For people worried about the picture quality: it's for a toddler. So far, ours have shown no interest in actually seeing the pictures they took. The real purpose of these is so they leave our camera alone! :)

Picture This!

My 3 year old is able to work this camera! It is great and durable and withstanding my 2 year old also. We love the pictures that they capture and display them on the tv. The fun frames spark their imagination and creativity. Just a great camera and toy.

Little girls will have a blast taking candid pics with their Kidizoom Camera. Kidizoom includes a connector cable to plug in and watch a picture slideshow or view the 5-minute movies they've created on any TV or PC. Fun photo-editing features allow kids to distort pictures or add silly frames. The camera also comes with three preschool games to keep the fun going. Plus, changeable faceplates let girls customize its look. Requires 4 "AA" batteries (not included). Measures 11"L x 3"W x 8"H.

Customer Review :

Excellent - Much better than many have rated it

The reviews of kiddie cameras are mixed, so I finally bought this for my just turned 4 year old daughter (for her birthday last week) with some trepidation. We've now had it for over 1 week, and its been a huge hit! I've never seen her take a toy with her everywhere and use it so often. So just from that perspective, its been a big success.

It takes small pictures (.3 of a megapixel), and takes a few secs to focus on an image (during which camera needs to be held still, a bit of a challenge for a toddler, but good discipline), but if you keep these 2 things in mind, the pictures aren't bad (certainly not as horrible as some reviewers imply). When I take pictures, and hold the unit still (and let the auto focus focus on the subject, the pictures are decent - albeit not great by any stretch). The flash is useless in almost all conditions (except possibly night), but you can easily turn it off (by pressing the delete picture button). Yes it has no zoom, but my daughter likes to experiment by moving closer and farther away. Yes the eye pieces can lead one to cut off the subjects head, but the LCD display is accurate, and I have taught my daughter to use this to frame pictures. She caught on quickly.

We added a 256 MB SD card, and she's been happily clicking away ever since. She's figured out how to delete and put the various supplied graphics (frames and funny facial features) over her real life subjects. I haven't yet shown her the video or games or other editing features.

One of the best features of this camera is the ability to hook it into the tv - no computer connection needed for her. She quite likes to see her pictures on the big screen. On my 62" tv, the pixelation is pretty awful, but I hope on smaller lcds it would be more acceptable.

In the long run, we will give her a better camera that takes better pictures (likely one of our old ones), but for now this is teaching her about photography, and its tough and kid friendly. Just don't expect amazing photos (she doesn't, so why should we?), and this more than delivers the goods for a 2-5 year old in my view.

While clearly not bullet proof, so far I've been impressed with the build quality and thoughtfulness of teh design - hardly the piece of junk that some others have labeled this toy. Good luck.

Great for 7 year olds

We purchased this for my daughter's 7th birthday. She has been playing with it nonstop for 4 days now. It has little games on it, you can record video and audio. She doesn't care to develop the pictures, she is just happy with taking pictures of everything(us,the cat,her stuffed animals)very entertaining. Easy for kid's to figure out how to delete pictures, go to video, add hat's and border's to the pictures. She can see the pictures she has taken on the screen on the back and do the add on's if she wants. It's also very cute to look at. Very happy with the purchase.

Love It

Was considering the Fisher Price version but did some comparing...the VTech one has more options. Our daughter got this with her birthday money...great purchase now she can leave Mommy's camera alone! She loves it...can work it better than I can work my own!!!
We didn't pay this price...we got our cheaper!
She is already looking forward to taking it with her when we got on vacation.
Great Fun! Great Gift!

If Your Child Has Used Real Digital Cameras Don't Buy This One

Bought for a 3 year old who was very familiar with how real "adult" digital cameras worked. We thought this would be a good alternative that she would enjoy and limit the risk of breaking a real camera. The screen resolution and picture quality are so poor that the child immediately said that the camera "was broken" and didn't want to use it. It is a waste of $. Can't return it because it comes in a hard plastic case that you must cut open. I would suggest buying a cheap "adult" digital camera instead of this one and just hoping that it doesn't break. This product is useless.

excellent kids camera

This is the best kids camera on the market. You get so much for the price. You can take photos and put crazy special effects on them. My kids love doing that. You can also take video and photos with voice. My 4 year old daughter got the fisher price camera and it was awful! The display was tiny and you couldn't see the photos you took. It didn't have any special effects, video capability, or games. We returned the fisher price model and got this camera and love love love it! I had to buy another one for my 7 year old son because he was fighting over the camera. I got it in a different color so they could tell them apart. I even find myself playing with it. Yes the quality is not super but you can put a memory card in and take 2 megapixel photos which is great for a kids camera.

It is GREAT! Have used it several times a week, off and on over several hours a night, since I got it a couple of weeks ago - batteries still good in it. Use it to help me align my telescope or know what I am looking at. Definately helping me learn my stars!

Better than I expected

I bought this as a present for my husband and he loved it. I was impressed with the precision and quickness of targeting a star. We also have a Celestron telescope so we may be inclined to be thrilled by things that supplement our stargazing habit. This is a nice hand held tool for quickly figuring out what you're looking at in the sky.

Rating :

better with a low ratio telescope

It is a easy-using, informative tool for astronomy lovers, however, for person without sharp vision like me, I still like to observe through a 2* or 5* lens instead of just a 1* tube. hopefully there will be some upgraded stuff that can fix that disadvantage.

Celestron Sky Scout

This is a wonderful new toy! No glitches or problems...it works just as advertised. The list price is a little high but I bought it 40% off as a "special sale item" and it is, I believe, at that price a very good deal. The GPS feature alone would cost almost as much without the astronomical capabilities.

Great for little one's

We got this for our 3yo and she loves it! Compared to the very first one that came out (our 6yo got one 3yrs ago) I think the buttons have to pushed down a lot harder and that might be diffucult for some. I like how there is a way to have a higher resolution. The camera goes from 640x480 to 1280x960. All in all, I think this is a great camera for little one's!

Well, whaddya want?

I'm glad it's cheaper than the original Kid Tough camera. I've never used the original or tried the Vtech brand...the resolution does suck. My phone is smaller and takes better pictures. It has been through drops and still works. Haven't tested it's waterproof feature yet. My daughter is 3 and is very petite. She has a hard time positioning her fingers to apply enough pressure on the shutter button. She also gets too excited about the shutter noise. As soon as she hears it, she thinks it's done and all of the images come out blurry. We'll work on that. I have to keep getting a screwdriver to open the battery port which includes the miniUSB port every time I transfer the pictures. I wish there was a wrist strap. Well, it's fun to her and her almost 2 yr old sister. I don't have to worry about them breaking my $1500 digital camera anymore.

Nice camera for kids

We just got this for our 8 year old and she loves it. I went with this one from the other fisher price one due to this one was only $45.00 compared to $70 range for the one on the Fisher Price web site. This one differs in that it does not have a SD slot. It does have 64mb of flash memory which lets it hold 170 pictures at the hightest quaility which is 640 x 480. It does seem to go through the batteries quick, but that could be because my daughter took over 200 pictures in an hour and looked at some and deleted some from the camera. It does have a built in flash. I have not downloaded any pictures to the computer yet. The instructions say it will be detected as a mass storage device. It does not come with any software but does have the usb cable to connect it.

Good for young children

My daughter is really enjoying this camera. Easy buttons/functions. Case is a great accessory. I was able to easily upload photos to my laptop. I haven't figured out yet if I can upload to an online site such as shutterfly but plan to work on that. Directions could have been more thorough.

Kids Digital Camera

My son loves to take pictures. This was perfect for him. However,
Don't expect to get good picture quality. It's horrible!

good but they'll make it better

The extra memory card that came with this camera was great. It holds over 200 pictures which can take an hour or so for my 4 and 1 year old to fill up. It is easy enough for my 1 year old to use for pictures but the delete button is a little too easy for him, that's probably why it's not recommended for that age. The quality of the pictures is low but that was listed on the box so I didn't expect much more. The only real problem that they need to fix is that the lens is pointed down and if the child uses the view finder, instead of the LCD screen, they will always cut off the top of the picture, usually the head. It took us a little while to teach our son to look at the screen, which is a little dark, but now his pictures are pretty good.

As you can see by the title, this product is for kids. I gave it as a present to my grandchild. He loved it. Children are always wanting to see the picture that you take. He could take his own picture and the view it on his own camera. It is an exceptional product for children. It is make of plastic and can be mishandled by children, which is a plus considering their care and handling of items. It has software included that can be hooked to a computer and printed. This particular camera also has a memory card, so that additional picture can be taken.

I'm disappointed with Fisher Price.
I was expecting a lot more from a company like Fisher Price.
I bought one of these cameras for my 3yo kid's birthday party.
The first one wasn't shooting pictures properly. The images were too dark, even during the day.
So I returned and got the second one. It was worse. It didn't even turn on.
I went through 2 sets of batteries just to be sure it wasn't the batteries.

Kudos to Amazon for its excellent customer service and making returns of defective items a breeze.

If you know of an inexpensive digital camera for a young kid please tell me about it. My other daughter is 4 and I've been looking at the Fisher Price Tough Kid digital camera and it has mixed reviews so if you own this camera I'd love to hear what you think of it. Question : Looking for a digital camera for my kids, please help!!?
I'm trying to find an inexpensive digital camera for my 4 year old and my 8 year old. I'm having more trouble finding one an 8 year old would like because she's to old for the fisher price tough kid one I'm looking at for my 4 year old. If you have a great digital camera for your young child I would love to hear what you think of it. Also, if you have the Fisher Price Tough Kid digital camera I would like to know if you like it. I've heard mixed reviews on that camera. Thanks for your help!!

Answer:
I haven't purchased one for my kids yet, but Wal Mart has some for only $19.99. I think that's a pretty good price for a digital camera, it also has great designs like Spiderman and Disney Princess which includes changable faces. It comes with two additional faces. They also have carrying cases for the cameras for only $5.00!! I hoped this helped and I hope the kids enjoy it. They will have fun getting their own pictures developed ;-)

Question : What is the best "kids" digital camera?
crayola, little tykes, fisher price... it seems they all have one. My 7 year old would like one. Any brand suggestions?

Answer:
I bought my niece the Fisher Price digital camera for Christmas last year, works pretty well. Very durable as well.

Question : Im trying to buy my 8 year nephew a kids digital camera...what are the best ones to buy?
Ive seen the fisher price camera for boys.. but I bought that one for a younger cousin and felt my nephew was too old for the bulky camera..I havent gotten any good reviews about the disney camera phones...Just some insight with this would be helpful..thanks

Answer:
Carefully check the storage/memory capabilities. DD had received a kids one as a Christmas gift and brought it w/ her on vaction to Disney. Before we coudl download the pictures, we had to replace the batteries. What we didn't know was when the battery power was lost, the pictures got lost with them. So be sure to download before the batteries need replaced, but I think a standard camera with a memory card would be better.

Question : Fisher Price Digital Kids Camera?

Answer:
I think all Fisher Price toys are made in China.

Question : Digital cameras for kids? Do you let your kids play with your camera?
-We're looking for a kids digicam/cheap digicam that plugs into the tv for my little cousin who's family has no computer. We can't really go anymore than 40 bucks because of how many kids we have in our family to buy for. -I'm also wondering what kind of camera your child has? Do you let them play with yours? How old are they?

Answer:
um, well I'm far too young to have children, but that wording would put up a bit of a warning, if I were ever a parent.. letting kids /play with/ a digital camera? eep. somewhere, in another dimension, I can hear expensive cameras breaking..

Question : Best kids digital camera (boys edition - no pink!)
What has your experience been with kids digital cameras? What have you found that has been absolutely fabulous - what makes it so great? What should I steer clear of? Why? What was your experience? Price range is up to $65 or so and for 4 year-old (his 2 year-old brother will also try using it...)

Answer:
This camera is great! http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2620&e=cameralanding My 4-year-old daughter got one for Christmas last year and she absolutely loves it! It's insanely durable. She's dropped it countless times and her 2-year-old sister has gotten her hands on it and colored it, thrown it, etc. and it still works great. It's obviously not the greatest quality picture, but it's good enough that your son will like it. I highly recommend them.

Question : Is there a decent digital camera for kids under $50 or so?
My son is turning 5 and wants a camera but the disney cars and the Diego cameras have horrible reviews. Anyone know of a good one? I'm not expecting crystal clear photos for this price I just don;t want to buy a total piece of junk.

Answer:
no such creature sorry

Question : Should I get my 6 yr old a REAL digital camera or the Kids digital camera?
My 6 yr old daughter really wants her own digital camera for Xmass. I have looked into the kids ones, and found that the only acceptable one is the VTech Kidizoom, and even this one has reviews for poor quality photos. This is $50 on sale. I have an opportunity to get her a Real digital camera Canon G3, (used, but in gr8 shape), for the same $50 price. I know this will take Gr8 pics, ones worthy or printing out, or putting on Myspace, or whatever! Obviously I will have to teach her to be careful with it, and Not share it w/friends or her little brother. We have a Sweet Canon camera that my husband and I used, it has been dropped a few times over the years, and aside from a few scratches its held up great. Cant wait to hear all your answers LoL , no my daughter does NOT have a Myspace. I would put her pics on my Myspace page though, so family can see them

Answer:
If you can get better for the same price, why not. It'll be a better value in the long run. Some of the "kids" cameras break much easier anyways. I sure hope your 6 year old doesn't have a MySpace! The minimal age on that is 13!!
