Big, colorful, durable puzzle!!!! Love it...

My two grandsons, ages 5 & 8, love this puzzle. It's 2 feet x 3 feet when completed and has extra large, colorful pieces. Of course the size of each piece varies a little, but the approximate size of one piece 5 inches by 6 inches. The pieces lock together well and don't come apart when bumped. They are also thick so they don't bend easily. The kids were so surprised by the size of the pieces when they first saw them and how big the finished puzzle was going to be that they couldn't wait to get started putting it together. I would definitely recommend this item.

Lots of fun!

My kids (3 & 2) had so much fun putting this together with me. The large pieces are great for younger kids and the puzzle is nice and sturdy.

Fantastic puzzle, but smells awful!

My son just turned 3 and is in love with puzzles. This one is currently his favorite. It's fun to put together but still a little challenging for a kiddo his size. The colors are very vibrant, and there are so many species of fish in the puzzle that we can turn it into a learning and search and find game too once the puzzle is together.
That being said, I have two concerns. First, right out of the box some of the pieces were flaking at the edges. I'm concerned that after putting it together repeatedly that the design will start to peel off entirely. Nearly half the pieces have some sort of peeling going on. Second, it smells AWFUL. We love to get down on the floor and put it together, and there are some serious fumes coming off the pieces. I've left it out to air overnight and the pieces still have a very chemical odor to them. I'm not sure if it's from the glue or the painting process or what, but I'm surprised at the odor.

My son loves it

My 3 year old is very into puzzles, so we got this for him for Christmas. He works it ALL the time, it's very durable (often we'll leave it on the floor for him to play with later and it holds up to him walking on it). Even after working it dozens of times, he still comes back to it, the image is stunning!

Rating :

great transitional puzzle for toddlers and young children

This puzzle is great for 3-6 year olds because of the size of the pieces and the durability of the cardboard-like material it is made from. It's hard to find transitional puzzles that aren't too baby-ish, with only a few large pieces, or too advanced, with tiny pieces that are easily lost or frustrate a young child. The bright colors and subject matter of the M&D puzzles are another plus. Love them!

My Two Year Old Son LOVES THIS TOY

They use a very similar toy to this at the Montessori School I am looking at enrolling my son, when I found it on amazon I couldn't resist purchasing it. HE ABSOLUTELY LOVES IT! It is great for his hand eye coordination, learning real world applications on how to cut his own food, and problem solving (while he is putting the fruit back together). I would HIGHLY recommend this toy for a boy or girl, it is a great teaching tool while the kids are having fun.

Wonderful Toy!

My little boy received this toy as a gift when he was about14 months. He plays with it everyday. He loves to name the foods and practice cutting the different items. He is 2 years old now and still uses the toy. He plays with the toy while I am cooking. He likes to pretend that he is cooking with me! The toy looks like new even after the daily handling.

Older cousins have been to the house and love playing with the food too!

It is pretty enough to leave on the coffee table! :)

Great for kids of all ages!

I ordered this toy for my granddaughter who was celebrating her 4th birthday. It was obvious her 9 year old brother liked it as well, as he was slicing and dicing with it before she even had a chance to finish opening her other gifts. Three weeks later and it is still their favorite toy to play with together. My grandkids are always wanting to help out in the kitchen when I'm cooking and this toy gives them the opportunity to practice their technique on one of the things I won't let them do yet. I highly recommend this toy and feel that the Melissa & Doug collection of toys will be a favorite of children for years to come. Since ordering this set, I have ordered two more different sets and they were a hit as well.

Loads of fun

This toy is amazing....Not only my daughter but I also love this toy!! Whoever thought of this idea of making this toy with Velcro on it, was really creative. It is priced o.k and is very durable. Also I gifted this toy to my nephew and he loves it too. You will not be disappointed buying this toy.

Great for a solar system/space loving child

I bought this for my 4 1/2 year old son who absolutely loves the planets. He is able to put it together himself and it is challenging enough to keep him busy for a while. I liked it so much that we bought another one as a gift for the 5 year old next door who is now beginning to take an interest in the planets. The pieces are thicker than a regular puzzle so it is a bit more durable than a regular puzzle. I would definitely buy more Melissa & Doug floor puzzles.

My 3/4 yr old loves this puzzle and has done it over and over again. The picture is so beautiful! I have since ordered the under-sea version and she loves that, too. Another home-run from M&D!!

Melissa and Dough have a long history of very good educational, durable and economic toys in the market. This floor puzzle is very durable, resistant and educational. I just love their toys!!

Jump into Space

My four year-old girl has really enjoyed this puzzle. After putting it together the first time she pretended to jump into it the way that they jumped into the chalk drawings in Mary Poppins. She has done the puzzle three times since then. We also gave the same puzzle to her 3 year-old cousin (male) who wasn't very excited (at first) to get a puzzle for Christmas until he realized that the finished product would be almost as big as he was. He has also reallty enjoyed it and put it together on his own several times.

Average Customer Rating :

Editorial Review :

The date is 1974. The place is Budapest, Hungary. Erno Rubik, an admirer of geometry and 3-D forms creates the world's most perfect -- and addictive -- puzzle. More than three decades later the Rubik's cube is still one of the best selling brainteasers. Whether it was full size or the smaller keychain version almost every child had this puzzle by in 1980 when it found worldwide success. Elementary school kids were seen solving it with their feet on "That's Incredible!", conspiracy theorists believed it was an Eastern bloc tactic to distract American youth from getting an education, and Cubaholics Anonymous was formally established to help cure the compulsive need to solve it.

Rubik’s Cube
Each side is just over 2", while each sticker is about ½" square.
For all of the hullabaloo, the Rubik’s Cube actually has a pretty straightforward premise. The faces of the cube are covered by nine stickers in six solid colors (one for each 2.25" side); when the puzzle is solved, each face is one solid color. Then you realize as you turn the rows and columns and see all the colors flash by that there are 43 quintillion possible pattern combinations (that’s 43 million millions), but just one right one. Maybe Cubaholics Anonymous wasn’t such a bad idea after all….

This Rubik’s Cube has reflective red, white, blue, yellow, green, and orange colored stickers with an official twenty-fifth anniversary sticker in the center white square. The cube is packaged in a clear hexagon box and includes a black display stand. There is also a solutions hint and game suggestion book, just in case.

robiks cube

This is the old original style rubiks. More fun than some of the newer adaptations. The grandkids are having fun with it.

Rating :

I heart the Rubik's cube!

The cube takes skill and patience, but once it is learned, it is easy. The challenge is not only complete the cube, but then to use spatial skills to solve it faster and more efficient. There are many different possibilities of solutions as well, you can make the challenge as hard or as easy as you would like, but stick with it either way! I find it soothing and relaxing to keep solving it over and over, and it's always good for a great party trick!

Rubik's Cube - Geat Stuff

My wife is 72 and I am 74 and with Rubiks Cube we have a lot fun. We use it no only as an educational toy, but to cool ourselves after some disputes. Very nice stuff. Paul

Rating :

Sad attempt at copying the original

Let me start out by saying that I am neither a kid nor a hard-core cuber. I am simply a guy who used to spend a lot of time cubing in the 70's and 80's when the Rubik's Cube first made it to the Western world. I still have the original cube - which works very well but doesn't deserve being man-handled by every single visitor to my home. Alas, I set out to purchase a replacement that I can occasionally "solve" while I also won't mind if my neighbor's kid messes around with it.

The particular cube offered here is, quite frankly, pathetic. If you've ever held a quality cube, you will instantly know that this is not one of them as soon as you pick it up. This cube is very light and the plastic has a certain "cheap" feel to it. As you would expect, a new cube is somewhat stiff - but there is a little more friction here than I would have hoped for. I am actually hesitant to use the word "friction" - it felt like there was a piece of gum stuck in between the cube. As though, somehow, the plastic is too soft to allow for individual tiles to easily slide past each other. Not fun at all. Now, I am sure that this problem would ease with time (and use), but there is another problem just around the corner that will likely prevent me from ever finding out:

Worse then the friction, is the simple fact that the stickers come off very, very quickly. Yes, I know, they are stickers - what do I expect!? Well, I do expect that they last for at least a few completions of the cube. With this cube, they did not. Instead, stickers started to slowly slide across tiles and I had to constantly reposition them. Of course, once they have come off and you have repositioned them, the glue is even less adhesive and the problem only gets worst. Obviously, once you start losing stickers, you keep getting a somewhat sticky cube, and you'll never get enough use out of the cube to find out if the friction problem gets better. In essence, you end up with a useless cube.

I must admit that I live in a very humid climate - which certainly doesn't help. Of course, other cubes that I have purchased by now do not have any of these problems...

In essence, there is simply no excuse for such an inferior product. It's a waste of money that won't provide the fun you are hoping for.

As I said, I am not a hard-core cuber nor am I obsessed with achieving some incredibly fast time to solve this thing. All I want is good value for my money and a product that is durable and does what it is supposed to do! Fortunately, if you are shopping around for a cube, there are a few sites that offer a much better product. Google "cube 4 you" for some excellent cubes. The guy operates out of China and only accepts PayPal. However, he is fast and honest - and you are likely going to pay less than you would for the Winning Moves cube - and that includes shipping!

not up to par

I usually love all the M and D puzzles. However, this one - while it's colorful, beautiful, exotic,... - also broke a piece while my grandson was playing with it the first time. Granted, he loves to destroy stuff, but usually the M and D puzzles hold up just fine. So I was surprised that this time it didn't. But he still loves to play with it.

Vibrant animal puzzle

This is a beautiful animal puzzle with large chunky wood pieces. I purchased this for my 2 1/2 year old twins who both enjoy building it. The large wood pieces are very durable and easy for little hands to use. It also comes with a wooden tray to make building easier. This toy is a favorite and pulled out by my girls daily.

Rating :

Shoddy Construction

This puzzle, and the Ocean puzzle from Melissa and Doug are paper on pressed wood. They are ok, but my little distructo managed to pull the paper off of one piece. Other pieces are splintering in the back. On the plus side, she loves the puzzle and puts it together over and over.

Rating :

Not quite as good quality as other Melissa and Doug

In general I am positive about this toy - its a good thickness, the pictures are recognisable and fun bright colours. After one or two goes of doing it together, my almost 3 year old can do this by herself now which makes her happy. However, the cuts of the wood were not perfect which made the puzzle difficult to get apart the first time and there was a couple of places the picture coating tore. It means they can be hard to get back together again if they arent lined up just so. We have the dinosaur one of the same series but had no problem with it so maybe we got a dud.

Good next step up from 12pc

Our 2-year-old loves jigsaw puzzles and the M&D 12pc truck puzzles were no longer challenging him. The 24pc was able to engage him again. He has since moved on to the large Goodnight Moon puzzle, but these were exactly what he needed at the time.

Questions & Answers
Question : What type of puzzles are good for a 12 month old baby?
I read some babies are doing puzzles at 12 months old, just wondering what type of puzzles are good for this age and what type other babies this age are doing. If you can post some links to the kind of puzzles that would be great.

Answer:
Puzzles with shapes or numbers or whatever cut into them. Preferably with big chunky handles or chunky style instead of nubs. Like this: http://www.amazon.com/Melissa-Doug-Wooden-Chunky-Puzzle/dp/B000E9DPCW/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and- games&qid=1254391764&sr=8-6

Question : puzzles...?
I am looking for some logic puzzles or any kind of puzzles I can put in a book to give my dad for his birthday...do you have any ideas??

Answer:

Question : What is the key to solving slider puzzles?
I am doing the Monkey Madness quest on Runescape and I can not figure out how to do the puzzle! I am also not spending 200K just to have the puzzle done for me. Is there a secret or key to this slider puzzle? Everyone else says it is very easy to do the slider puzzle, but I just SUCK at slider puzzles. I REALLY need help. PELASE HELP!

Answer:
Tips1) Plan your moves in advance, you'll start seeing where exactly you need to move pieces to get it to match2) Try breaking it up to parts, don't try to complete the puzzle in 1 go. See if you can complete a corner.

Question : When did your child start doing puzzles, and what kind were they?
My 2.5 year old can do the puzzles that have anything 48 pieces and less, and everyone thinks that he must be special and very smart. I am a mom and do think that of him, but I wanted to know when did most children start doing puzzles.

Answer:
i have four kids and none of them could do that size puzzle at that age. i did see a child around that age doing a 100-piece puzzle once and i was staggered by it. i think your son's accomplishment is pretty impressive, but obviously from your other answers and my experience watching Puzzle Genius Kid there are others who can do it, as well....

Question : How do you store your puzzles? I have all different sizes?
The puzzle pieces get mixed up and thrown all over. I saw that Melissa and Doug have a storage case but its only for standard sized puzzles. I have a lot of chuncky puzzzles.

Answer:
We put all puzzle pieces in zip lock bags and mark each one with markers so we can tell which puzzle they go to. Mark the puzzle itself and the bag so the kids can tell too. We used stamps on the back of the puzzle and the pieces for a long time - so they were all the same for each puzzle that worked too. But zip locks seem to keep the pieces together better

Question : Is there something else I can use besides puzzle glue to hold my puzzles together?
A while back I was in Wal-Mart buying a puzzle and they had this stuff to hold your puzzles together but instead of being the regular glue it was like a big sticker sheet that you stuck to the back of the finished puzzle. I didn't buy it then and now I wish I had because since then I am unable to find it again. Has anybody ever heard of this stuff and do you know what its actually called?

Answer:
One alternative would be acrylic medium. It comes in mat and glossy. One would paint this on the finished puzzle sort of gluing it together. This is the stuff artists use when they want to thin the color of acrylic paint they are using but want more body than water. This can normally be found by the artist's paint section.

Question : What puzzles and activities do kids enjoy?
I need to design a fun activity sheet to keep kids occupied. I've made a spot the difference, a wordsearch and a maze but I'm running out of ideas. What other puzzles do kids enjoy? Any online links would be appreciated.

Answer:
well as far as i m concerned kids love activities tat include running n moving from one place 2 another rather than sticking there butts to a single chair and drawing their heads off or joining dots...coz my younger sis would always say no to puzzles when she is a lil angry, sad etc but wod never refuse 2 basket ball ball throwing n stuff like hide and seek etc.............

Question : What puzzles/activities help improve your lateral thinking and computation skills?
I'm trying to improve my thinking speed, memory recall and lateral thinking to improve my ability to perform in university exams (I do a very mathematical and intensive course). Apparently, puzzles and games can help. I just want to know which ones (you would understand if crosswords don't do 'jack').Sukudo's one of them, but what are the others?Unhelpful comments would be thumbed down.Cheers.

Answer:
sudoko's good but i also do brain traing on facebook which has a mixture of puzzles. 4 per test. i really think that will help with what your after. its available through facebook but probably elsewhere on the computer/internet free. hope this helpsjen

Question : What are some puzzles like Sudoku that I can get online?
I like puzzles like Sudoku, Add Them Up (found in a newspaper), kakuro and anything like them. I also like the puzzles that you have to try and draw without taking your pencil off the paper. But I need them to be able to print off so I can do them away from the computer. Any websites that have any of these puzzles would be helpful. Or if you know anyother puzzles like these that would be fun you could mention them too.

Answer:
This site is GREAT!!! You can print them off and there are LOTS of them!. They are also grouped by easy, intermediate, hard, etc. I love Sudoku too.www.krazydad.com/sudokuThere are also other types of puzzles on there at:http://www.krazydad.com/puzzles/
